Businesses along Obote avenue were brought to a standstill for over an hour when the convoy escorting Richard Omara Awio aka DT Cobra majestically paraded on the street after he was duly nominated by the electoral commission to run for the bye election to fill the vacant position of Railways division district councilor.
Omara who is a renowned journalist at radio Lira 95.3 based in Lira town is on NRM ticket, and his nomination was quite colorful and attended to by over two thousand voters from Railways division.
After his nomination Omara was welcomed and paraded via all streets in Lira town by his supporters some of whom were pushing his car.
Richard Omara while addressing his supporters after nomination promised to work with the current district leadership for effective service delivery to the local people since they had not been getting it.
In some areas in Lango most of the NRM candidates are going unopposed during this bye election, something that had never happened in the history of Lango.
While responding to a journalist's question that NRM has no support in the region, he in turns said the problem is not NRM as a part but candidates that can be trusted. "Sometimes others command poor political support", he added.
This is the first Lira journalist to register and command such huge political support in the area on NRM ticket.
"I am getting a lot of support from both existing top political leaders in the district and powerful businessmen in the area", Omara assured his supporters.
Railways division district representation fell vacant when the then elected councilor Boniface Omara resigned. A UPC candidate Mr. Ocen was also nominated but political analysts predict dooms for most of the UPC candidate during the bye election.
Boniface Omara resigned shortly and bounced back to his teaching work after realizing that councilors allowances are get peanuts.
Electoral commission has designed the first week of May as the day to vote during the ongoing bye election
