On 20 April 2009, tears and deep worries gripped the relatives of a killer UPDF lieutenant after he was sent to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.

According to high court judge Simon Mugenyi,  Lt. Obote was found guilty of murdering his wife on 7 March 2005 at Lango College in Lira town after the woman had taken refuge at their home. After committing the offence he later handed over himself to Lira central police station.

During the trial, the state demanded for the death sentence, but Obote's defence councel, Twonto and company advocates, pleaded for lesser punishment for the convict who had been in remand for more than four years at Lira central government prison.

It is alleged that Lt. Obote was forced to shoot dead his wife following a report that the woman was having affairs with another officer.

While pronouncing his judgment high court judge Simon Mugenyi said the sentence is to send a signal to other security personnel not to misuse their guns.

According to the state, the government is taking care of the deceased's children.

Lt. Obote gained international fame after he dared LRA rebels in 1996 when he went up to Southern Sudan and brought back his three kids who were abducted by the rebels.

Lt Obote deserves a chance. With due respect to the family of his victim whom i personally knew, Lt Obote was a great citizen, he was a man of great talent as well. He taught me at Kyaggwe primary school, he was a fantastic entertainer with Ndere troupe, served with Saracen Uganda, worked with inteligence, UPDF and Amuka at the Climax of Kony's activities in the North, Rescued his sons from captivity but befallen by one moment of madness killing the mother of his own children. I believe him to be a correctable person and if given a chance his still has alot to give the society.

You may not find the exact details of the rescue. However having at the time of the abduction of his children he was in intelligence. The children were abducted from his Amugo village, I knew them because besides him being my primary school teacher, he was also a family friend. I know for certain that after the above abduction, he joined Amuka, It is propably at this point that he may have worked along with the conventional army in sudan. The younger son was first to be rescued abd the older one followed. Rumours had it that the older son surrender at the rebel rank of Lt along with his bodyguards, just like his father. Lt Obote was interviewed by Arthur Baguma of the new vision in a 2 paged special. You may wish to contact Baguma for details.
