On 20 April 2009, tears and deep worries gripped the relatives of a killer UPDF lieutenant after he was sent to life imprisonment for murdering his wife.
According to high court judge Simon Mugenyi, Lt. Obote was found guilty of murdering his wife on 7 March 2005 at Lango College in Lira town after the woman had taken refuge at their home. After committing the offence he later handed over himself to Lira central police station.
During the trial, the state demanded for the death sentence, but Obote's defence councel, Twonto and company advocates, pleaded for lesser punishment for the convict who had been in remand for more than four years at Lira central government prison.
It is alleged that Lt. Obote was forced to shoot dead his wife following a report that the woman was having affairs with another officer.
While pronouncing his judgment high court judge Simon Mugenyi said the sentence is to send a signal to other security personnel not to misuse their guns.
According to the state, the government is taking care of the deceased's children.
Lt. Obote gained international fame after he dared LRA rebels in 1996 when he went up to Southern Sudan and brought back his three kids who were abducted by the rebels.
