Sad news for pork and meat eaters: following the reported outbreak of a strange pig disease and foot and mouth disease in Lira district, top hotels operators in town are now importing the pork and beef from outside the district.
It seems there are large numbers of pork clients in both 'kafunda' and top hotel business in Lira. Just hardly few days when we reported that more than 32 pigs had died of strange disease which experts highly suspect for being
African swine fever in Railways division in Lira town, fewer of customers are now visiting their usual pork joint. However, in other big hotels they are reported to be importing it from Masindi, Luwero and Kampala.
Lira district veterinary boss Dr. Wilson Kowari since the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the district has officially banned the sale meet and now pork.
Other people who can not do without meat have all along been using bus conductors to import for meat from nearby districts that are free from the outbreak.
According to Dr. Okwir government has not sent any drugs for vaccinating hundreds of cattle that are suffering from the disease. He warned that there is no proper vaccination for pigs urging locals to keep their animals indoors.
In 2004 African swine fever killed more than 300 pigs in Lira town.
